The De Facto Truck Tie Downs

Are truck tie downs greenable? I would say yes! the most prominent ones are steel tie downs, say chain binders, they last very long and the  recycling is almost effortless, and we can make the manufacturing process as green as possible.

Grade 70 Chain and lever binders are trucking accessories , according to NACM and ASTM all these chains and binders are made from carbon steel, their working load limits are higher than their straps counterparts , say we compare grade 70 size 5/16” binder chain(which has 4700lbs WLL) to 2” tie downs(typical WLL 3333lbs) ,  6600lbs 3/8” transport chains vs. 5400lbs 4” tie down straps , you will see that compare to tie down straps, binder chains are much stronger, and chain binders are even stronger than same size chains, for instance, 5/16”X3/8” binder has WLL 5400lbs which is tougher than 4700lbs working load limit of 5/16” grade 70 transport chain . Another reason chains and binders are considered heavy duty, is their design factor is 4 to one while webbing tie downs have 3 to 1 typical design factor, see “Design Factor” for reference .

These chains and binders are mostly used to haul big, heavy equipment, such as backhoe, bulldozer, these things are hard on straps, only carbon steel chains can sustain that kind of abuse , the most popular chain size for these  kind of load are 3/8”, for some light equipment which is still too heavy and hard for straps 5/16” will be ideal chain size. 1/2” and up are mostly for really heavy stuff, for example, military applications, say to tie down battle tanks, you will definitely need 1/2” even 5/8” grade 70 chains to tie those bad boys down.

As we stated above, grade 70 chains , or say binder chains are used on a lot things except for overhead lifting. There are people who use these chains to tear trees, to tow mobile loading docks, a lot of forestry services use large quantity of these grade 70 steel chains and binders . The most frequently seen application for these chains and binders are in transportation industry, the most obvious use is for hauling big tractors.

In the end of day, we probably can tag these chains and binders as all purpose and all weather tie downs, we can put them to all kinds of uses, even under extreme weather conditions they will work well, sometimes these chains and binders even can be used as rescue tools. Made from steel make them strong yet versatile, you will have peace of mind when they are in place to secure your truck load.
